Switch Surprise Battery Boost

Teknozip – Nintendo is reportedly planning a revised version of its highly anticipated Switch 2 console, featuring a user-replaceable battery. This move is seemingly aimed at preempting upcoming EU regulations, according to a report by Nikkei.

The current Switch 2 model uses batteries secured with adhesive, but Nintendo intends to ditch the glue to comply with EU rules taking effect in February 2027. These regulations mandate that all devices must have easily replaceable batteries.

Nintendo’s proactive approach means the updated Switch 2 could arrive "soon". Surprisingly, the report suggests even the Joy-Con 2 controllers will feature replaceable batteries.

EU Influence, Global Impact?

While this change is driven by EU regulations, the availability of this revised Switch 2 outside of Europe remains uncertain. Nikkei reports that the new version won’t be released in Japan, suggesting a limited availability similar to Apple’s modified iPhones for the EU market. Sony is also planning updates to its PlayStation 5 DualSense controller for the same reason.

The possibility of similar right-to-repair legislation in the US could influence Nintendo’s decisions. While six states have passed right-to-repair laws, they don’t match the scope of the EU regulations. Given the original Switch’s long lifespan and ongoing support, easily replaceable batteries in the Switch 2 would be a significant advantage.

Other Switch 2 Developments

In related news, the Switch 2 recently received an update allowing users to play original Switch games in TV Mode while using the console as a handheld.
