Apple’s Bold Move A Budget MacBook With iPhone Brains

Teknozip – Apple has unveiled the MacBook Neo, a vibrant and affordable laptop priced at $600, marking a significant shift in its approach to entry-level computing. Departing from the understated design of the MacBook Air and Pro lines, the Neo boasts a colourful chassis reminiscent of the late 2000s MacBooks, but it’s the internal components that truly set it apart.

The most striking feature is the inclusion of Apple’s A18 Pro chip, the same silicon found in the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max. This marks the first time Apple has powered a MacBook with an iPhone processor, rather than its custom M-series chips. The base configuration includes 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, with an option to upgrade to 512GB, though RAM remains fixed at 8GB. The A18 Pro features a 6-core CPU with 2 performance and 4 efficiency cores, along with a 5-core GPU.

The design is a chunkier evolution of the MacBook Air, evoking memories of the classic white MacBooks. Colour options include Silver, Blush, Citrus, and Indigo, all in muted tones similar to the iPhone XR. The keyboard appears to be subtly colour-matched to the body, but concerns arise as it resembles Apple’s infamous Butterfly keyboard, known for its reliability issues.

Here’s a detailed look at the MacBook Neo’s specifications:

Feature Specification
CPU A18 Pro 6-core (2 performance, 4 efficiency)
GPU 5-core GPU
Display 13-inch LED-backlit 2408 x 1506 resolution
RAM 8GB
Storage 256GB
Ports 1 USB-C 3, 1 USB-C 2, 3.5mm headphone jack
Wi-Fi Connectivity Wi-Fi 6E (802.11ax)
Bluetooth Bluetooth 6
Weight 2.7lbs (1.23kg)

The 13-inch Liquid Retina display boasts a resolution of 2,408 x 1,506 pixels and 500 nits of brightness. Apple claims the A18 Pro chip enables seamless performance for everyday tasks like web browsing, document creation, content streaming, photo editing, and AI applications. The company further asserts that the MacBook Neo is "up to 50 percent faster" than the "bestselling PC with the latest shipping Intel Core Ultra 5."

Other notable features include a weight of 2.5lbs (matching the MacBook Air), a 3.5mm headphone jack, two USB-C ports, a 1080p FaceTime HD camera, Wi-Fi 6E, and Bluetooth 6. Apple estimates a battery life of up to 16 hours on a single charge. Unlike the MacBook Pro and Air, the Neo lacks a MagSafe charging port but retains a physical trackpad with a tactile click, rather than relying on haptics.

In some ways, the MacBook Neo can be seen as a spiritual successor to the 12-inch MacBook (2015-2017), which prioritised portability but suffered from limited performance and a single USB-C port. However, the Neo targets a different market segment, aiming to be an accessible entry-level option. The 12-inch MacBook launched at $1,300, significantly more expensive than the $1,000 MacBook Air at the time.

The MacBook Neo is available for pre-order now, starting at $600, and will ship both in-store and online on March 11th. This announcement follows Apple’s recent unveiling of the M5 Pro and Max MacBook Pro, the M5 MacBook Air, the M4 iPad Air, the iPhone 17e, and updated Studio Display XDR and Studio Display models.
